From Earth to Table: How Pottery Comes to Life at Burst of Butterflies

Pottery process from clay to finished mug at Burst of Butterflies studio, showing wheel throwing, kiln firing, painting, and final glazed ceramic piece

Thinking about trying pottery but not quite sure what actually happens?

You’re not alone.

One of the most common things we hear from first-time guests is:
“I’ve always wanted to try this… I just didn’t know what it would be like.”

So let’s walk through it—simply, honestly, and step-by-step.

Because every piece you see in our studio follows the same journey:

Earth → Kiln → Table

🌍 It Starts as Earth

Every piece begins as clay.

Just a soft, simple lump shaped from natural materials—nothing fancy yet, nothing perfect.

When you sit down at the wheel or start hand-building, that clay is completely open-ended. It can become anything.

And yes… it might wobble. It might lean. It might surprise you.

That’s part of the process.

✋ Then It Takes Shape

This is where the experience really comes to life.

Whether you’re:

  • trying the pottery wheel for the first time
  • shaping something by hand
  • or painting a ready-made piece

You’re not expected to “be artistic.”

In fact, most people walk in saying they’re not.

And then something shifts.

You start to relax. You get into it. You focus. You laugh a little when things don’t go perfectly.

And before you know it, you’ve created something that didn’t exist before you walked in.

🔥 The Kiln Changes Everything

After your piece is created, it goes through the most magical part of the process: the kiln.

This is a high-temperature oven that fires at over 1,800°F — hot enough to permanently transform clay into ceramic. There are actually two firings: a bisque fire first, which hardens the raw clay into a porous, paintable surface, and then a glaze fire after the color is applied, which melts the glaze and locks in that smooth, finished look.

The whole cycle — firing up, holding temperature, cooling down slowly — takes the better part of a day. Cooling too fast can crack or even shatter a piece, so we never rush it.

It’s not instant. It takes time, patience, and care.

And honestly… this is where a lot of the mystery lives.

Because when your piece goes into the kiln, it doesn’t look finished yet.

But when it comes out?

That’s when everything clicks.

🎨 Color Brings It to Life

For pottery painting and glazed clay pieces, this is the moment where personality really shows.

Colors deepen. Details pop. Surfaces transform.

What started as something simple now feels complete—something you actually want to use, display, or give as a gift.

🍽️ And Then… It Reaches the Table

This is the part we love most.

Because your piece isn’t just something you made.

It becomes part of your life.

A mug you reach for in the morning.
A bowl you use for dinner.
A piece you remember making with your kids, your friends, or someone special.

It’s not just pottery.

It’s a memory you can hold.
